Myself and my colleague, Laura Hemmingsen, first started working on many of the items on the checklist, about 5 years ago, when we started an environmental club called the ETF (Environmental Task Force). We met weekly with representatives from each class and worked on ways that we could make our school more environmentally responsible.

I have worked through the list with the help of my colleagues, caretaker and cleaners and we know that we have achieved 25 of the criteria necessary to become a Green School. We have also adapted the checklist into our School’s Policy on the Environment and will continue to use it as part of our school’s development.

One of the most difficult parts of the process is finding the time to do all of the work alongside a full time teaching job and also encouraging the participation of colleagues, who are preoccupied with other things. The most rewarding part of the ETF has been the collaboration between colleagues, parents and children and seeing the successful implementation of new Environmental projects and schemes. One of the most surprising results of the work we’ve done is seeing the level of passion and commitment towards the environment from those of us in the Rygaards Community.
